About this piece
The vanity case is one of Chanel's oldest ideas — a rigid, upright box, originally for cosmetics — reworked with a chain so it can be carried as a bag. The appeal is the structure: it stands on its own, keeps its corners, and looks composed on a table, which is not true of most small bags. Black with gold is the version that dates the slowest.
Chanel has made the quilted flap and the chain strap into a grammar the whole category borrows from. Pieces hold their value because the codes barely move — the diamond quilting, the interlocking CC, the leather-threaded chain.
